Communiqué Issued at the end of the 132nd Meeting of the Joint Tax Board (JTB) held on the 14th September, 2015 at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja

The JTB held its 132nd Meeting on the 14th September, 2015 at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja with the theme: “Improving Revenue Collection Through Enhanced Collaboration by Tax Authorities”. The Board deliberated on various issues and reached the following major decisions:
1.    That revenue collection can be improved through enhanced collaboration by Tax Authorities on sharing and exchange of information, joint tax audit, tax enlightenment and enforcement exercise, sharing of information on remittance of taxes, joint training programs and review of tax laws.
2.    That JTB should collaborate with other relevant agencies to look at the administration of Value Added Tax (VAT) in a holistic manner in order to improve the collection of the tax.
3.    That Joint State Revenue Committee be constituted and operational at the State level as prescribed in Section 92 of Personal Income Tax Act (as amended) to provide a platform for the State and Local Governments on creating efficient tax administration across the country.
4.    That JTB should collaborate with relevant government agencies to bring more taxpayers into the tax net to enhance registration of Taxable persons under the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) platform.
5.    That the ban on sale of emblems/stickers across the country to motorists for purpose of generating revenue is still in force and any form of revenue collection should be in accordance with the provisions of extant laws.
6.    That Drivers’ Licenses and Number Plates issued can be verified by sending SMS to following numbers;

7.    That all motorcycles and tricycles registered should have a Proof of Ownership Certificate (POC)
8.    That the appointment of Tunde Fowler, a member of the Joint Tax Board, as the Ag. Executive Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) by Mr. President was highly laudable and believes it was a decision taken in the right direction.
