Communiqué Issued at the end of the 133rd Meeting of the Joint Tax Board (JTB) held on the 14th December, 2015 at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja

The JTB held its 133rd Meeting on the 14th December, 2015 at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja with the theme:  “ IGR: Appraising Collaborative Efforts within the JTB towards widening the tax net ” .
The Board deliberated on various issues and reached the following major decisions:
 
1.    that State Governments should inaugurate the Joint State Revenue Committees as required by law. The functions of the committees include harmonization of taxes and levies in the States, advising the States on tax matters among others things.
 
2.    that the Federal and States tax authorities should strengthen collaboration among themselves so as to enhance revenue collections.
 
3.    that the States and Local Government should enforce the ban on printing, issuance and sale of stickers and emblems in our tax system and call on Inspector General of Police to assist in enforcement across the States.
 
4.    that Peer Review of the various State Boards of Internal Revenue be conducted to ascertain compliance level in relation to the provisions of existing tax laws and general tax administration processes.
 
5.    that adequate taxpayer education and sensitization be carried out and as such decided to embark on nationwide media campaign through Tax Jingles on Television Stations in all States of the Federation.
 
6.    that steps should be taken to widen tax net through collaborative efforts within JTB by conducting regular tax audits, compliance checks and enumeration of taxpayers nationwide.
