The Executive Governor of Bauchi State, Barrister Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, has charged tax authorities in the country to work in synergy and embrace information communication technology (ICT) for efficiency in the Tax System.
The Governor gave the charge at the Opening Ceremony of the 142nd meeting of the Joint Tax Board held in Bauchi on the 27th November, 2018 with the theme: ‘Consolidated Credible Database and Exchange of Information: Role of Stakeholders’.
He said that the need for effective sharing of information among key players in the tax system cannot be overemphasised as so many benefits abound in such endeavour. He noted that so many challenges in the tax system would be overcome with such collaboration in information sharing.
The Governor also noted that, with exchange/sharing of information among relevant agencies with respect to revenue generation and tax administration, the menace of tax evasion or avoidance would be greatly reduced if not eradicated, thereby increasing more funds in the Government’s coffers to enable it discharge its responsibilities to the citizenry.
He implored the Joint Tax Board, being the umbrella body of tax authorities in the country, to fashion out more ways and strategies that would increase tax revenue generation as a means of complementing government revenue diversification efforts.
Governor Mohammed noted that the country, more than ever before, needs strategic thinking and efficient policies that will strengthen the economy for job and wealth creation. He pointed out that the country is in dire need of sustainable revenue generation to cushion the effects of unemployment, hunger, diseases and infrastructural decay as the most potent way of overcoming such challenges is through having reliable source of funding programmes aimed at addressing these menaces.
He reiterated the determination of his administration in providing conducive environment, as well as the necessary support, to the State Internal Revenue Service to enable it to succeed as revenue generation is an onerous task that needs support and goodwill from constituted authorities.
While thanking the Joint Tax Board for the decision to choose Bauchi State as the host of its 142nd Meeting, the Governor expressed his readiness to partner with any organisation whose aim is for the development of the State and the nation at large.
Earlier, the Executive Secretary of the Joint Tax Board, Oseni Elamah, mni, stated that members of the Board are passionate about their responsibilities and are always committed to exploring effective ways in improving revenue generation for government hence, their quarterly meetings to take stock of their operations with a view to re-strategizing towards achieving better results. He emphasised that taxation, as a form of revenue generation, is a very tasking and complex responsibility that needs cooperation and support of all, especially the State Chief Executives.
The Executive Secretary further stated that the theme of the meeting was aptly chosen in view of the importance of collaboration and information sharing among tax authorities as well as promoting harmony and efficiency in the nation’s tax system.
He noted that the Joint Tax Board will continue to strive and explore avenues and modalities on how best to meet its statutory mandate hence, all hands are on deck for success.
Elamah reminded members of the need to complement government’s economic diversification drive by being more committed in ensuring that adequate revenue accrue to the government to enable it to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the citizenry. He thanked the Executive Governor of Bauchi State for his support to the State Revenue Service and urged him to do more to enable the IRS to perform more excellently.
On his part, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service and Chairman of the Joint Tax Board, Mr. Tunde Fowler, noted with delight the support of the Executive Governor of Bauchi State to the State IRS which he said had helped improve the State’s revenue base to achieve tremendous growth, thereby improving the index and standing of the State among the best in the country.
He implored the members of the Board to work tirelessly towards meeting the expectations of the Chief Executive as well as collaborate in critical areas such as exchange of information, joint audit, and taxpayer education for the betterment of the system.
In his welcome address, the Executive Chairman of Bauchi State Internal Revenue Service, Alhaji Jibrin Hussaini Jibo, thanked the Executive Governor of Bauchi State and the entire Bauchi State Executive Council for the tremendous goodwill and support to the IRS which according to him account for the modest achievements recorded by the management of the Revenue Service.
He reiterated the determination and commitment of the management and staff of the BIRS to work tirelessly in justifying the confidence reposed in them.
The highlights of the Joint Tax Board 142nd Meeting include gala night, cultural troupe performances, and a visit to the famous Yankari Water Spring at the Game Reserve as well as visitation to the tomb of the first Prime Minister of Nigeria, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and other projects executed with taxpayers’ money in the State.
