The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has held its Induction Ceremony for the new members of the Board. The induction ceremony is a periodic event convened by the JTB for its new members to further enlighten them on the functions of the Board as well as their expected roles as major stakeholders in the Tax Administration System in Nigeria.
Members of the Board are the esteemed Chairmen of the States and FCT Internal Revenue Services (IRSs), a set of distinguished personalities who have demonstrated both professional and intellectual integrity, who are appointed by the respective State Governors of their State based on their track records and in-depth knowledge of tax administration within their jurisdiction.
The Board also has on its member list representatives of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), the Federal Ministry of Finance, and the Federal Inland Revenue Service, who serve as co-opted members of the Joint Tax Board.
The inductees at the event were the newly appointed Executive Chairmen for the Abia, Anambra, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Ekiti, Imo, Kaduna, Kano, Osun, Plateau, and Sokoto States Internal Revenue Services, respectively. Also inducted were the representatives for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at the Board.
During the induction ceremony, series of activities were carried out including paper presentation by an invited professional, Prof. Anthony Igbokwe with the theme: Effective Leadership Styles for Top Management Officers, who took the members through some of the accepted best practices and rudiments for effective and efficient leadership.
Also, the event provided both new and past members of the Board with ample opportunity to share practical experiences that will help in improving the tax administrative processes and revenue drive, which is expected to optimize revenue generation within the various tax jurisdictions.
High point of the ceremony was the Oath Taking by the new members that was conducted by the JTB Legal Adviser, Barrister Ocheme Stephen Abu (Esq.), who administered the “JTB Pledge” and the “Oath of Allegiance” to the tenets and workings of the JTB on the new members.
The auspicious event which took place at the Grand Pela Hotel, Durumi, FCT, Abuja, on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 had in attendance the amiable Chairman of the Board aptly represented by Mr M. L. Abubakar (FIRS Coordinating Director, Executive Chairman’s Group – CD/ECG) and the Secretary of JTB, Madam Obomeghie Nana-Aisha who charged the new members to judiciously utilize the opportunity presented to them as members of the Board.
